STI stands for sexually transmitted infection. It’s an infection that can be passed on through vaginal, anal or oral sex. Most STIs are transmitted through the exchange of sexual fluids, but some can be passed on through skin to skin genital contact.
The term, STD, sexually transmitted disease, became popular but can be misleading because a person can be infected but not show any signs of disease.
Today, STI, sexually transmitted infection, is the preferred term because some infections, such as HPV or HSV cannot be cured but the infected person may not have any symptoms of the disease.
Hope this helps!
