By Summer.
Many teens, even me, think talking to parents about sex is impossible. Talking about sex itself can be awkward, especially when talking to parents. A lot of teens expect parents to react negatively or make assumptions, but they may be surprised at how chill parents can be when it comes time for them to have the “sex talk” with their children. Starting a conversation about sex can be the hardest part, but once the
conversation is started, it gets easier.
Many teens think talking to parents about sex will only lead to disagreements between themselves and the parents. Parents often have a hard time letting their kids go and may often feel offended when their views about something are challenged. Parents need to be assured you can be trusted and will be safe
without their constant guidance.
A few tips about initiating a conversation with your parents about sex:
- Before trying to talk to them, write down your questions and concerns so you can be prepared to bring them up during a “normal conversation”
- Have a time in mind to engage in the talk where there will be no distractions during the conversation
- Avoid telling your parents what your friends’ parents allow
- Only compare yourself to your siblings, if necessary
- Be cool and not defensive
- Listen to parents’ feedback and be sensible.
If talking to your parents is simply impossible, a third party, such as your doctor, teacher, counselor or a trusted family friend can assist you in your talk with your parents. This may make the conversation flow more smoothly and you may stand a chance of getting parents to listen better.
Many parents are also nervous when it comes to talking to their children about sex. Be patient and
persistent. In time, it’s likely that you and your parents will relate to each other.
Even though I have a good relationship with my parents, talking to them about sex is hard to do. My parents always reassure me that they are the best people to talk to when it comes to any issues I may have in my life. I also depend on God to get me through any challenges I may be faced with.
