What is it?
The sponge is – you guessed it – a small round sponge. It’s made of soft plastic that covers your cervix during sex to prevent pregnancy.
How does it work?
The sponge covers the cervix to prevent semen from entering the uterus. It also contains spermicide to stop sperm from moving. The sponge can be used by itself or with condoms. Using both will give you extra protection.
How effective is it?
The sponge is 91% effective at preventing pregnancy when used properly. However, it is most effective if you have never given birth. If you have, the effectiveness drops to 80%.
Where can I find it?
The sponge can be purchased over-the-counter, without a prescription, at pharmacies and some supermarkets. The only brand available in the U.S. is called Today Sponge.
